West Bengal Governor Visits Site of Tragic Incident in Chopra, Assures Investigation into Minors’ Deaths

West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose undertook a visit to the site in Chopra, Uttar Dinajpur district on February 20, where a heartbreaking incident occurred. Four minors lost their lives allegedly after a mound of earth caved in during drainage expansion near the India-Bangladesh border. The Governor, in an effort to comprehend the situation, engaged with local residents and Trinamool Congress leaders who provided insights into the incident.

During his visit, Mr. Bose not only inspected the spot but also conversed with the local community and Trinamool Congress leaders to gather information about the unfortunate event. Further demonstrating his commitment to understanding the incident in its entirety, the Governor is scheduled to meet with the families and parents of the deceased children.

The Governor’s journey to Chopra began with a train ride to Kishanganj on February 19 night, followed by a road trip to the affected area. The incident, which occurred on February 12, saw four children, aged between five and 12, losing their lives when a mound of soil collapsed during excavation work carried out by the Border Security Force (BSF) in Chetanagach village of Chopra block.

The tragedy escalated into a political matter when West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held the BSF responsible, citing negligence leading to the unfortunate deaths. Following this, a delegation of Trinamool Congress leaders met with Governor Ananda Bose at the Raj Bhavan, urging him to initiate an investigation into the mishap and requesting his visit to Chopra to assess the situation firsthand.
