Multiple videos capturing the harrowing scenes of a stabbing attack at Australia’s Westfield Shopping Centre in Bondi Junction emerged on social media, revealing the terror that gripped shoppers as an assailant wielding a knife went on a rampage. The attack, which occurred on Saturday, resulted in the tragic deaths of six individuals and left several others injured.
Footage circulating on social media depicts the assailant running towards shoppers, prompting chaos and panic among the crowd. In one video, a courageous individual is seen attempting to block the attacker’s path on an escalator, while another showcases the swift response of a female police officer who ultimately neutralized the assailant.
The attacker, clad in a t-shirt and shorts, brandished the knife openly as he targeted multiple individuals, resulting in the deaths of six victims. Despite initial reports indicating five fatalities, the toll rose when another victim succumbed to injuries in the hospital.
Amidst the chaos, hundreds of shoppers, including children, fled the mall as authorities evacuated the premises. Reports suggest that armed police conducted searches, including a rooftop parking lot, as they pursued potential suspects involved in the attack.
Witnesses recounted moments of fear and uncertainty during the ordeal, with Roi Huberman, a sound engineer, seeking refuge in a store as gunshots rang out. “Then the very capable person in the store took us to the back where it can be locked. She then locked the store and then she let us through the back and now we are out,” Huberman recounted.
