A notorious thief from Tamil Nadu, Balamurugan, wanted in 53 cases including murder and theft, escaped from police custody at Viyyur Central Jail in Thrissur district of Kerala on the night of May 17.
Balamurugan escaped from the custody of Tamil Nadu police while he was being transported back to Viyyur Jail from a court around 9 p.m. Reports indicate he pushed open the door of the police van upon reaching the prison premises.
Known for his history of escaping from police custody and assaulting officers, Balamurugan was apprehended in September 2023 in connection with a robbery in Marayur. His criminal record spans several serious offenses in both Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
The Thrissur City police have launched a manhunt to capture Balamurugan and return him to custody.
