Switzerland is set to host a significant international conference on June 15-16, aimed at rallying global support behind a peace initiative proposed by Ukraine to resolve its conflict with Russia. The conference, to be held at the scenic resort of Buergenstock near Lucerne, will convene representatives from major world powers, including G7 nations, the European Union, and influential countries from the Global South such as China, India, South Africa, Brazil, Ethiopia, and Saudi Arabia.
The Swiss government, in a statement issued on Wednesday, expressed its intention to foster a collective understanding on achieving a comprehensive and just peace for Ukraine in alignment with international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter. Following extensive discussions with key stakeholders, including preparatory meetings at the level of national-security advisers over the past year, Switzerland believes there is substantial international backing for the conference to kickstart the peace process.
While the participation of national leaders or lower-level officials is yet to be confirmed, the inclusion of China remains uncertain, given its perceived influence over Moscow. Notably, Beijing’s involvement in only one preparatory meeting raises questions about its stance on the conflict. However, recent reports alleging increased Chinese support for Russia have raised concerns among Ukraine’s allies, particularly the United States.
Despite Russia’s current absence from the conference agenda, organizers aim to outline a concrete roadmap for its eventual involvement in the peace process. Kyiv, while advocating for broad agreement among delegations on fundamental principles before engaging directly with Moscow, insists on key tenets such as respecting Ukraine’s territorial integrity, withdrawing Russian troops, and ensuring nuclear and food security.
Switzerland’s initiative underscores its commitment to mediation in international conflicts, leveraging its historical neutrality. Despite challenges faced in its previous mediation efforts, particularly in the aftermath of the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Switzerland remains steadfast in its pursuit of peace. With global momentum building and key players onboard, the upcoming conference marks a significant step towards resolving one of Europe’s most protracted conflicts.
