Swati Maliwal, former chief of the Delhi Commission For Women (DCW) and an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, is set to take oath as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) on January 31. Maliwal, known for her activism in women’s issues, emphasizes that her role as an MP will focus on raising grassroots issues, particularly those related to women’s safety and participation in the workforce. She expresses concern about crimes against women, questioning the high number of FIRs filed for such incidents. Maliwal also plans to address issues of unemployment, price rise, and advocate for resources to enhance police capabilities, gender sensitivity, and forensic science laboratories in every state.
As an AAP leader, Maliwal alleges a “witch hunt” against opposition leaders and emphasizes the importance of holding the government accountable in Parliament. Despite concerns expressed by her family, she remains determined and unafraid to question the government, stating that she will continue fighting for justice and serving the people. Maliwal’s tenure as an MP comes at a time when opposition leaders claim restrictions on raising issues in Parliament, expressing the view that the country’s democracy is under threat.
The AAP has been vocal about alleged political targeting, with leaders facing challenges for raising their voices against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Maliwal urges women to guide her and emphasizes her commitment to serving people with honesty, even if it leads to imprisonment. She sees her role in Parliament as representing women and vows to continue fighting for justice until her last breath.
