Sri Lanka Dominates Bangladesh in First Test, Sets Daunting Target

In the first Test match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh on March 24, Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis showcased exceptional batting performances, each scoring their second century of the match. Their outstanding contributions helped Sri Lanka set a challenging target of 511 runs for Bangladesh before pushing the hosts to the brink.

Sri Lanka’s second innings saw Mendis scoring an impressive 164 runs, adding to his first-innings century, while De Silva contributed another 108 runs, complementing his century in the initial innings. Their remarkable batting display propelled Sri Lanka to a total of 418 runs before they were all out.

With a substantial lead, Sri Lankan pacers initiated the victory push immediately, wreaking havoc on Bangladesh’s batting lineup. At stumps, Bangladesh found themselves struggling at 47-5, requiring a daunting 464 runs for an improbable win.

Vishwa Fernando led the bowling attack for Sri Lanka, claiming 3-13, while Kasun Rajitha and Lahiru Kumara also chipped in with crucial wickets. Bangladesh’s dismal performance with the bat contrasted sharply with the dominance displayed by De Silva and Mendis throughout the match.

De Silva and Mendis became only the third pair in Test history to achieve the rare feat of scoring a century in both innings of a match. Their partnership of 173 runs in the second innings further solidified Sri Lanka’s stronghold.

Despite a valiant effort from Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who took 4-74 for Bangladesh, Sri Lanka continued to assert their dominance. Mendis, in particular, showcased remarkable resilience, securing his 150 runs and extending the lead with a flurry of boundaries, including three sixes off Taijul Islam in an over.

As Sri Lanka set an imposing target, Bangladesh faced an uphill battle to avoid defeat. With the series poised for an intriguing finale, the second and final match is scheduled to be played in Chittagong from March 30.

The first Test match witnessed a display of exceptional cricketing talent, highlighting Sri Lanka’s dominance and setting the stage for an exciting conclusion to the series.
