Dharmatic Entertainment continues its exploration of Bollywood’s inner workings with the release of “Showtime” on Disney+ Hotstar. Unlike its mystery-thriller predecessor, “The Fame Game,” this series delves into unadulterated tabloid pulp, blending scandalous ‘insider-outsider’ narratives with in-house cameos, offering viewers a glimpse into the glitzy and tumultuous world of Bollywood. Led by Emraan Hashmi and Mahima Makwana, “Showtime” presents a brisk and entertaining affair, delivering gossipy good fun.
The narrative follows Raghu Khanna (Hashmi), managing Viktory Studios founded by his ailing father, Victor (Naseeruddin Shah). After their latest film, “Imaan-e-Ishq,” faces a box-office setback, Raghu seeks redemption with the audacious project “Pyaar Dangerous.” Attempting to secure favorable reviews, he resorts to bribing critics, including the idealistic Mahika (Mahima Makwana), who, instead of accepting the offer, boldly calls out Raghu on national TV.
A surprising twist reveals that Mahika is Victor’s granddaughter, inheriting control of the struggling studio. Raghu, feeling slighted, exits Viktory Studios to establish his own, setting the stage for a ludicrous and campy war within the industry. The series satirizes entrenched industry traditions and celebrity dynamics, creating a compellingly humorous narrative.
“Showtime” may lack the mystery-thriller elements of its predecessor but compensates with its soapy and salacious storytelling. With glimpses of celebrity cameos and a touch of insider humor, the series offers a lively and entertaining portrayal of Bollywood’s glamorous yet tumultuous landscape.
