In a recent development surrounding the Sandeshkhali assault case allegedly perpetrated by jailed former Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his support to a key figure in the fight for justice, BJP candidate Priyanka Patra. During a telephonic conversation, PM Modi lauded Patra’s courage and acknowledged her pivotal role in seeking justice for the victims of the Sandeshkhali incident.
PM Modi expressed admiration for Patra’s resilience in the face of adversity, referring to her as a symbol of “Shakti Swaroopa,” a term associated with powerful Hindu goddesses like Durga and Kali. He commended her efforts in holding influential individuals accountable for their actions and assured her of the BJP’s unwavering support in her endeavors.
Patra, who spearheaded the campaign for justice in Sandeshkhali, recounted the harrowing experiences of the victims and emphasized the crucial role played by women in her efforts. She affirmed her commitment to continue advocating for the rights of the marginalized and vowed to follow the path paved by the support of women in her community.
The Sandeshkhali incident gained national attention when a team of Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials investigating a ration scam was attacked by supporters of local TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan. Subsequently, protests erupted in the village, with hundreds of women accusing Shahjahan and his associates of land grabbing and sexual assault.
In response to the escalating protests, the Trinamool Congress suspended Shahjahan from the party for six years. Following his arrest on February 29 after evading authorities for two months, Shahjahan was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) pursuant to a Calcutta High Court order.
PM Modi urged Patra to continue raising awareness about the central government’s initiatives and highlighted the discontent among the people of West Bengal with the current state government’s alleged obstruction of central schemes. He expressed confidence that the collective strength of “Nari Shakti” (women power) in Bengal would support their cause for justice and change.
