Russia’s recent elections, held from March 15-17, were more a formality than a true exercise in democracy, with President Vladimir Putin securing a predictable victory. With a reported 88% of the vote, Putin’s dominance was reaffirmed, showcasing a united front under his leadership, according to the Central Election Commission.
However, the elections were carefully orchestrated, allowing only Kremlin-approved candidates to participate. Critics of Putin’s policies were systematically sidelined, with legislation enacted to stifle dissent, particularly regarding the Ukraine war. Despite record turnout, the outcome was essentially predetermined, aimed at bolstering Putin’s image amidst international scrutiny.
Putin’s enduring popularity stems from his role in rebuilding Russia after the tumultuous post-Soviet era, positioning the nation as a global power and championing Orthodox Christian conservative values. Yet, his leadership style has also led to authoritarianism, with opposition voices silenced and media censorship prevalent.
