Rajnath Singh Assures BJP Will Preserve Constitution Preamble and Maintain Caste-Based Reservation

In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Union Minister Rajnath Singh asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will never change the Preamble of the Indian Constitution or end caste-based reservation. Addressing concerns raised by the opposition, Singh emphasized the BJP’s commitment to upholding these fundamental principles.

Singh highlighted that the only alteration to the Preamble was made by Indira Gandhi’s government in 1976, and criticized the Congress for attempting to make it a poll issue. “In 1976, the first time a change was made to the Preamble of the Indian Constitution. And that was done by Indira Gandhi,” Singh stated. He added, “Our constituent assembly was then of the consensus that amendments can be made to the Constitution as required. Congress and other political parties have done this a lot. But there is no question of making changes in the preamble. But they did it, and are now trying to blame us. The BJP does not even think about it.”

Rajnath Singh’s remarks come in response to claims by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who suggested that the BJP would “tear up and throw away” the Constitution if it retains power. Other Congress members have expressed concerns that the BJP might remove the term “secularism” from the Preamble.

Singh also reassured that the BJP has no plans to end caste-based reservation, which he deemed necessary for the country. However, he firmly rejected the notion of providing reservations based on religion. “Why would we end reservation? This country needs reservation for OBC, ST. They (Opposition) are the ones talking about giving reservations on the basis of religion. But we say that in no situation will we give religion-based reservation as the Constitution does not allow it,” he declared.

The BJP, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is aiming for a third consecutive term in office. With six of the seven phases of voting for the Lok Sabha elections completed, the final round of voting is set for June 1, and results will be announced on June 4.

Rajnath Singh’s statements are intended to allay fears and clarify the BJP’s stance on these critical issues as the nation approaches the final phase of elections.
