The President of India nominated renowned author and philanthropist Sudha Murty to the Rajya Sabha on International Women’s Day, eliciting her delight. The unexpected honour coincided with the celebration of Women’s Day, adding to her joy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised her nomination on social media, emphasizing her presence in the Rajya Sabha as a testament to the strength and potential of women in shaping the nation’s destiny.
In an interview with The Hindu, Ms. Murty shared her surprise at the nomination, describing it as a pleasant and unexpected development. She highlighted the significance of this opportunity, providing her with the highest public platform in India to serve the people. While in Thailand to deliver lectures, she mentioned that she would formulate her plans for parliamentary tenure upon her return.Sudha Murty expressed her commitment to utilizing this platform for the betterment of the Indian people.
Born in Shiggaon, Haveri district of Karnataka, in 1950, Sudha Murty holds a degree in Computer Science engineering from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.). As the first woman engineer at Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (TELCO), now Tata Motors, she has played a pioneering role in her field. Married to N. R. Narayana Murthy, co-founder of Infosys, she chaired the Infosys Foundation for over two decades, engaging in various philanthropic activities. A distinguished author and motivational speaker in Kannada and English, Sudha Murty’s books for children have achieved bestseller status. She was honored with the Padma Bhushan in 2023, and her daughter, Akshata Murthy, is married to U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
