Prashant Kishor: Missed Opportunities Cost Opposition in 2024 Lok Sabha Elections

New Delhi: The opposition could have been in a stronger position for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections had it seized multiple opportunities when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was vulnerable, according to political strategist Prashant Kishor.

In an interview with NDTV, Kishor pointed out that the opposition missed critical moments for resurgence during 2015 and 2016 when the BJP suffered several state assembly election defeats.

“The first such occasion was in 2015 and 2016 when the BJP lost multiple state assembly elections,” Kishor said. “In January 2015, the Aam Aadmi Party won the Delhi assembly elections. The BJP lost the Bihar elections in November of the same year. In the following year, until May, assembly elections were held in Assam, TamBengal. The BJP could win only Assam, and that too in an alliance. Those 15-18 months were an opportunity for the Congress-led opposition to bounce back since PM Modi’s popularity had just begun to rise post-2014,” he elaborated.

Kishor emphasized that the opposition’s failure to capitalize on these setbacks for the BJP was a significant missed opportunity that could have altered the political landscape in favor of the Congress-led coalition. He believes that effective strategizing and unity among opposition parties during this period could have presented a formidable challenge to the BJP in subsequent elections.
