PM Modi Inaugurates 2550th Bhagwan Mahaveer Nirvana Mahotsav on Mahavir Jayanti

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 2550th Bhagwan Mahaveer Nirvana Mahotsav at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on Sunday, marking the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti. During the event, PM Modi also released a commemorative stamp and coin in honor of the Jain saint.

Speaking at the Mahotsav, PM Modi extended his greetings to the nation, stating, “Bharat Mandapam today witnesses the beginning of the 2550th Nirvan Mahotsav of Lord Mahavira…I extend my wishes to the people of the country on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti.” He noted that being a part of the celebration amid election activities was a comforting experience.

PM Modi highlighted India’s unique role in promoting peace and harmony, especially during times of global conflict. He remarked that India is not only the oldest living civilization but also a beacon of hope and safety for humanity. He said, “Today the world caught in conflict is expecting peace from India. The credit for this new role of new India is being given to our growing capability and foreign policy. But I want to tell you, our cultural image has a big contribution to this.”

Earlier, PM Modi greeted the nation on Mahavir Jayanti, expressing that Lord Mahavir’s teachings of peace and goodwill could serve as a guiding light for building a ‘Viksit Bharat’. He emphasized that the teachings of Mahavir—peace, restraint, and harmony—are vital in shaping the nation’s future.

Mahavir Jayanti is one of the most important festivals for Jains, marking the birth anniversary of Mahavir Janma Kalyanak, the founder of Jainism. It falls on the 13th day of the Chaitra month in the Jain calendar, which this year was observed on April 21. The celebrations typically include processions with Mahavir’s idol on a chariot, religious songs, charity events, fasting, temple visits, and mass prayers. Followers of Jainism celebrate by eating satvik food, a strictly vegetarian diet made without onions or garlic, reflecting the spiritual values and teachings of Lord Mahavir.
