Challenges and Solutions: Examining the Feasibility of One Nation One Election

The concept of “One Nation One Election” has been a subject of considerable debate, with questions raised about its feasibility and applicability. However, a high-level panel led by former President Ram Nath Kovind has attempted to address these concerns in its recent report submitted to President Droupadi Murmu.

The panel’s report, presented on Thursday, advocates for the idea of simultaneous elections for both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies in the initial phase. Subsequently, synchronized local body polls would follow within 100 days, as per the recommendations.

One of the key challenges addressed by the panel is the logistical aspect of holding simultaneous elections for multiple tiers of governance. Critics have questioned how all Lok Sabha polls, assembly polls, and local body elections can be conducted simultaneously.

In response, the committee proposes a phased approach, starting with simultaneous elections for the highest levels of government and gradually incorporating local body polls within a specified timeframe. This phased implementation aims to streamline the electoral process and minimize disruptions.

Another concern raised by some members, including former chief justices of major high courts, pertains to the practicality and constitutional implications of “One Nation One Election.” The panel acknowledges these concerns and offers recommendations to address them, emphasizing the need for constitutional amendments and legal safeguards.

Additionally, the panel’s report delves into the financial implications of implementing simultaneous elections and suggests measures to ensure equitable funding and resource allocation across different levels of government.

Overall, while challenges remain in the implementation of “One Nation One Election,” the Kovind-led panel’s report provides a comprehensive framework for addressing these concerns. By advocating for a phased approach and highlighting the constitutional and logistical aspects, the panel aims to pave the way for a more synchronized electoral process in India.
