In order to expedite the construction of the 21 km long tunnel between Bandra Kurla Complex and Shilphata, the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has excavated the 394-meter long Additionally Driven Intermediate Tunnel (ADIT) at Ghansoli for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project.
The ADIT will provide direct vehicular access to the main tunnel during construction and operations, and may also serve as an evacuation route in emergency situations.
The excavation work for the ADIT began on December 6, 2023, and took six months to complete. It included 214 controlled blasts using 27,515 kg of explosives under the supervision of experts with high-level instrumentation.
The ADIT, a 26-meter-deep inclined tunnel, will facilitate the construction of another 3.3 km tunnel through the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) by allowing simultaneous tunnelling access of approximately 1.6 meters on each side.
