Naveen Patnaik Slams PM Modi’s Remarks, Highlights Neglect of Odisha’s Heritage and Development Needs

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has strongly criticized Prime Minister Modi’s recent statements made during a poll rally in the state, accusing the PM of neglecting Odisha’s interests. In a video shared on social media platform X, Patnaik expressed disappointment over the PM’s alleged oversight of Odisha’s cultural heritage and developmental proposals.

Patnaik highlighted instances where proposals regarding the recognition of classical Odissi music were reportedly rejected twice by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). He questioned the PM’s commitment to Odisha, particularly regarding the allocation of funds, noting discrepancies between the support for Sanskrit and the neglect of Odia.

Responding to the PM’s remarks on Odisha’s natural resources, particularly coal, Patnaik criticized the lack of an increase in coal royalties over the past decade despite significant extraction from the state. This exchange of criticisms between the Chief Minister and the Prime Minister underscores tensions over governance priorities and resource management.

The PM, during his rally in Berhampur, had emphasized the BJP’s focus on both development and heritage, citing the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya as an example. He also challenged Naveen Patnaik on his knowledge of the state’s districts and capitals, positioning himself as an alternative for Odisha’s leadership.

In response, Patnaik accused the BJP and Congress of contributing to poverty in the state despite its abundant resources. He questioned why, despite Odisha’s richness in various aspects, its people continue to face economic challenges, placing blame on the incumbent and previous administrations.

As Odisha gears up for the upcoming polls across four phases from May 13 to June 1, this exchange between the Chief Minister and the Prime Minister adds to the political discourse. Voters will ultimately decide the fate of the state in the coming elections, with the results to be announced on June 4.
