The attack, which saw assailants indiscriminately opening fire on concertgoers and setting the venue ablaze, has been claimed by the Islamic State group through statements disseminated on social media channels. US intelligence agencies reportedly shared information with Russian officials indicating that the group’s branch in Afghanistan was plotting an attack in Moscow.
The assault, described as the deadliest in Russia in recent years, unfolded amidst ongoing tensions surrounding the country’s involvement in the conflict in Ukraine.
