In a significant development, Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq led Friday prayers at the historic Jama Masjid in Srinagar, marking his fourth visit since his release from house detention in September 2023. The occasion also witnessed his first appearance at the mosque since October 6, 2023. The Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid confirmed that authorities granted permission for the Mirwaiz to offer prayers, signaling a notable relaxation in the previously imposed restrictions.
Hundreds of worshippers gathered at the mosque to listen to the sermon delivered by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the chief cleric of the Kashmir Valley. Expressing his sentiments, the Mirwaiz highlighted the sadness and pain caused by repeated restrictions on his movements, emphasizing the impact on the religious discourse when the pulpit falls silent.
Last year, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq took legal action, accusing the Lieutenant Governor’s administration of placing him under house arrest at his Srinagar residence since 2019, following the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special constitutional position. However, in a significant turn of events, the administration, in its response on March 6, informed the court that the Mirwaiz was not under house arrest and was free to move wherever he desired.
While addressing the media, the chief cleric acknowledged the ongoing legal battle for his full release from house arrest. He expressed his commitment to ensuring justice through the legal process, particularly emphasizing the removal of all restrictions on his movement, including the religious right to perform his duties as the Mirwaiz.
