Transgender Icon Maya Thakur Advocates for Education and Social Acceptance in Himachal Pradesh

Shimla, May 18 – Maya Thakur, a leading transgender advocate from Kothi village in Solan district, Himachal Pradesh, is championing the cause of education and social acceptance for the transgender community. Thakur, who faced severe discrimination and bullying, dropped out of school after class IX. She shared her story of being denied bathroom access and the lack of support from teachers, which compounded her struggles.

Education and Social Acceptance for Transgender Individuals

Thakur’s journey underscores the urgent need for systemic changes to support transgender individuals. She highlights that education, job opportunities, and ending discrimination are critical issues. Many transgender people aspire to become teachers, lawyers, and police officers but face dismissive attitudes when applying for jobs. Thakur clarifies misconceptions about transgender identities, emphasizing, “We are unisex, not eunuchs.”

Greater Awareness and Legal Protection Needed

Thakur points out that social acceptance of transgender people is generally better in South India compared to the North. She criticizes the police in Himachal Pradesh for their reluctance to register complaints from transgender individuals. Having worked with an NGO in Delhi, Thakur now advocates for including transgender issues in school curriculums, similar to practices in countries like Canada, to ensure a discrimination-free educational environment.

Ending Exploitation and Enhancing Dignity

Thakur calls for an end to the exploitative culture where some eunuchs extort money through threats. She urges legal action to protect the rights and dignity of transgender individuals. Thakur’s advocacy is a call to action for greater inclusivity and societal change in Himachal Pradesh.
