Manipur is grappling with catastrophic flooding, leaving at least four dead, 13 injured, and over one lakh people affected, following heavy rainfall induced by cyclone Remal. The relentless downpour over the past week has inundated vast areas, causing devastation across the northeastern state.
According to official reports, five fatalities occurred from May 28 to May 31, with two in Senapati and three in Imphal West district. The flooding has affected 1,26,950 people across 255 villages, damaging 16,364 houses and impacting 522 hectares of crop areas. Additionally, 20,504 stranded individuals have been evacuated to safety.
The Relief & Disaster Management Department has established 51 relief camps to provide shelter to the affected populace. The situation has been exacerbated by 292 landslides reported in hill districts, leading to further displacement and destruction.
The deployment of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), air force, navy, army, and Assam Rifles underscores the severity of the crisis. These agencies have been engaged in rescue and relief operations, evacuating thousands and distributing essential supplies in flood-affected regions.
While water levels are gradually receding in some areas, key commercial zones such as MG Avenue, Thangal Bazar, and Paona remain submerged. Fresh flooding has been reported in Nambol, Bishnupur district, underscoring the persisting threat.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh, accompanied by state officials, inspected the flood-affected areas and expressed gratitude for the proactive support received from Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The assurance of assistance and provision of ex-gratia payments to the affected families reflect the government’s commitment to alleviating the plight of those impacted by the calamity.
Efforts to contain the flooding are ongoing, with the government mobilizing resources to reinforce embankments and mitigate further damage. Despite challenges, authorities remain steadfast in their resolve to address the crisis and provide relief to affected communities.
