Manipur Chief Minister Addresses Business Loan Repayment Crisis

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren, who oversees the Finance portfolio, addressed the state assembly on Monday, shedding light on the economic challenges faced by businessmen in the region. According to Biren, a majority of business owners in Manipur are struggling to repay loans and interest, despite the government’s efforts to provide relief through moratoriums. The Chief Minister stated that the moratorium had to be extended twice due to a lack of enthusiastic response from the business community.

Responding to a calling attention motion raised by Thangjam Arunkumar, who highlighted the multifaceted crises faced by local businesses, Biren acknowledged the difficulties and urged cooperation. Arunkumar pointed out that the economic challenges were exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing clashes between Kuki and Meitei communities. He specifically highlighted the plight of young businessmen facing increased transportation charges and cargo fees.

Biren emphasized the need for cooperation and explained that the state government couldn’t bear the burden of repaying the substantial amounts involved. The government had issued notifications twice, providing moratorium relief, and another notice extending the period until March 2024 has been issued. The Chief Minister’s statements underscore the economic strain experienced by businesses in Manipur and the ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact through policy measures.
