Madras High Court Directs Consideration of Additional Classrooms for Uthamapalayam School

In response to a public interest litigation petition filed by an alumnus of a government school in Uthamapalayam, Theni district, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court directed the Director of School Education to positively consider the representation for constructing additional classrooms on the school premises.

Advocate K. Ponnaiah, born and raised in Uthamapalayam and an alumnus of the government school, filed the petition highlighting the decline in school strength due to insufficient classrooms and the absence of a proper playground. The school, upgraded to a High School in 1961-62, faced challenges in recent times, leading Ponnaiah to submit representations to authorities regarding the vacant land adjacent to the school.

Despite the transfer of the land in response to the representation, no action had been taken to build additional classrooms. Ponnaiah, who cleared SSLC in 1963-64, sought the court’s intervention to direct authorities to address the shortage of classrooms on the school premises. The Madras High Court’s Division Bench, comprising Justices D. Krishnakumar and R. Vijayakumar, has instructed the Director of School Education to submit a positive report after considering the petitioner’s representation.
