Kerala on High Alert for Extremely Heavy Rainfall in Three Districts on May 19-20

Kerala: The state remains on high alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Kottayam districts on Sunday and Monday due to the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall (above 20 cm in a 24-hour period).

Red Alert for Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Kottayam

According to a 10 a.m. weather update by the IMD, these districts are expected to experience extremely heavy rainfall, prompting the red alert. Residents in these areas are advised to take necessary precautions and stay updated with the latest weather information.

Orange Alert for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, and Ernakulam

The IMD has also issued an orange alert for isolated very heavy rainfall in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, and Ernakulam on both days. The rest of the districts, excluding Kannur and Kasaragod, are also preparing for isolated heavy rainfall.

Continuous Rainfall Expected Until Thursday

Kerala is likely to receive heavy rainfall till at least Thursday, as per the latest updates. During the 24 hours ending at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, most districts experienced steady to heavy rainfall, according to the IMD bulletin.

Summer Rainfall Brings Relief After Harsh Summer

The southern state endured harsh summer weather for nearly three months before the summer rainfall began to increase in May. The scorching heat had caused direct and indirect losses amounting to ₹500 crore to the state’s farm sector, based on a preliminary assessment by the State Agriculture Department.
