With heavy rains persisting in multiple parts of Kerala, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall. The IMD also cautioned about high waves and potential sea incursions along the Kerala coast until Thursday night.
Responding to the adverse weather conditions, Health Minister Veena George announced the activation of a state control room within the Health Department Directorate to enhance epidemic prevention efforts. The control room will coordinate epidemic prevention activities, manage data, ensure hospital services, monitor drug availability, establish protocols, and respond to incidents.
Health workers and the public can reach the control room at 0471-2302160, 9946102865, and 9946102862 for assistance. Additionally, the Disha Call Center, equipped with a panel of doctors, is available at 104, 1056, 0471-2552056, and 2551056 for health-related queries, operating round the clock. The e-Sanjeevini Doctors service is also accessible.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has advised against venturing into the sea from the Kerala coast due to expected strong winds and adverse weather conditions. The IMD forecasts further advancement of the Southwest Monsoon over additional parts of the South Bay of Bengal, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and East-central Bay of Bengal in the next two days.
Moreover, strong westerly/southwesterly winds are expected over Kerala and the Lakshadweep region from May 23 to 25, resulting in heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Kerala on May 23, and heavy rainfall in isolated places on May 24 and 25. Unfortunately, four individuals have lost their lives in various rain-related incidents, as reported by the State’s Disaster Management Authority.
As Kerala grapples with the impact of heavy rains, authorities are actively engaged in disaster management and ensuring public safety amidst challenging weather conditions.
