Juvenile Justice Board Summons 17-Year-Old for Fatal Car Crash Hearing in Pune

The Juvenile Justice Board has issued a notice to a 17-year-old boy, who allegedly crashed his car into a motorbike, killing two persons in Pune, to appear before it on May 22. This development follows the Pune police’s petition to review the Board’s initial bail order.

The revision petition will be heard at noon at the Juvenile Justice Board’s office in Yerawada, Pune. The incident occurred in the early hours of May 19 when the Porsche car, allegedly driven by the 17-year-old, fatally knocked down two motorbike-borne software engineers in Kalyani Nagar, Pune. The police claim the teenager was intoxicated at the time of the crash.

The boy, son of a real estate developer, was initially granted bail by the Juvenile Justice Board just hours after the incident. Following this, the Pune police approached a sessions court to challenge the bail order, seeking permission to treat the teenager as an adult, given the “heinous” nature of the crime. However, the court directed the police to take the matter back to the Juvenile Justice Board for a review.

Bail Granted on Grandfather’s Assurance

The Juvenile Justice Board had granted the boy bail on a surety of ₹7,500 and an assurance from his grandfather to keep him away from bad company. The order emphasized that the grandfather assured the Board he would ensure the boy, referred to as a Child-in-Conflict with Law (CCL), stays away from negative influences and focuses on his studies or a vocational course.

“His grandfather has given an assurance that he will keep the Child-in-Conflict with Law [CCL] away from any bad company and he will concentrate on his study or any vocational course which is useful for his career. He is ready to abide by the condition imposed on him. Therefore, it is just and proper to release the CCL on bail,” the order from the Juvenile Justice Board stated.

Upcoming Hearing

As the investigation continues, the Juvenile Justice Board’s upcoming hearing will play a crucial role in determining whether the initial bail conditions will be upheld or modified in light of the new petition. The police are expected to present their case for treating the juvenile as an adult, emphasizing the gravity of the offense and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
