JSW Defence Ventures into Indian Defence Sector with Major Acquisition and ₹250 Crore Army Order for Cutting-Edge Specialist Mobility Vehicles

JSW Group, a major player in various industries, has recently diversified into the defense sector with the launch of JSW Defence and Aerospace, aligning with the Make in India initiative championed by the Indian government.

In a strategic acquisition, JSW Defence has obtained a controlling interest in Gecko Motors Pvt Ltd., a renowned off-road vehicle company. Following the acquisition, the company has been rebranded as JSW Gecko Motors Pvt Ltd (JSW Gecko), though specific financial details of the transaction remain undisclosed.

Under the dynamic leadership of Jaskirat Singh Nagra, JSW Gecko has achieved a significant milestone by securing a substantial order valued at ₹250 crore from the Indian Army. This order encompasses the production and supply of 96 Specialist Mobility Vehicles (SMVs), known as ATOR N1200. Notably, these cutting-edge vehicles are scheduled to make a debut at the Republic Day parade in New Delhi on January 26, 2024.

The manufacturing process of the order is currently in full swing at JSW Gecko’s state-of-the-art production facility in Chandigarh. With a tight production schedule, the completed vehicles are slated for delivery to the Armed Forces before June 2024, showcasing JSW’s commitment to timely execution.

Highlighting the immense potential within India’s defense budget, which is anticipated to reach a staggering $200 billion by 2030, Parth Jindal, Director of JSW Group, expressed optimism. “India boasts a robust defense budget of $73.8 billion, poised to grow significantly by 2030. We identify a substantial opportunity, particularly in the capital outlay segment, which forms a significant portion of the defense budget,” remarked Jindal.

In pursuit of strategic growth, JSW is actively forging partnerships with both global industry leaders and innovative Indian start-ups. The objective is to introduce cutting-edge military technology across various defense equipment segments. Jindal emphasized that the focus is on bringing in niche technologies to address specific capability gaps within the Indian Armed Forces and collaborating closely with the soldiers in the line of combat.

To lead their foray into the defense business, JSW Defence has appointed Commodore Madhu Gentela (Retd) as its leader. This move underscores the group’s steadfast commitment to making substantial strides in the defense and aerospace sector, aligning with the evolving needs and priorities of the Indian Armed Forces.
