India Slams U.S. State Department’s Criticism of Citizenship Amendment Act

India has issued a strong rebuttal to the U.S. State Department’s criticism of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), dismissing it as “misinformed and unwarranted.” In a press briefing, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal defended the inclusive provisions of the Indian constitution and lauded the CAA as “laudable.”

Mr. Jaiswal emphasized that the CAA is focused on granting citizenship rather than revoking it, addressing issues of statelessness, upholding human dignity, and supporting human rights. He categorically rejected any concerns regarding the Act, reaffirming its positive intent and impact.

The U.S. State Department’s spokesperson, Matthew Miller, expressed concern about the implementation of the CAA, particularly noting the notification of the Act on March 11. He stated that the U.S. is closely monitoring the situation and emphasized the importance of religious freedom and equal treatment under the law for all communities.

India’s response underscores its commitment to defending the CAA and its stance on religious freedom and equal rights. The exchange highlights the diplomatic tensions surrounding the CAA and the differing perspectives on its implications and implementation.

As the debate over the CAA continues, India’s firm defense reflects its resolve to uphold the principles enshrined in its constitution while asserting its sovereignty in the face of external criticism.
