India Delivers BrahMos Missiles to Philippines, Boosting Defence Export Ambitions

India has fulfilled its commitment to the Philippines by delivering the first batch of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and launchers, marking a significant milestone in bilateral defence cooperation. The delivery comes two years after the signing of a substantial deal worth nearly $375 million, aimed at equipping the Philippine Marines with three batteries of these advanced missiles.

The consignment was transported to the Southeast Asian nation via an Indian Air Force (IAF) C-17 transport aircraft, showcasing India’s logistical capabilities and commitment to strengthening defence ties with regional partners. The deal, inked in January 2022, underscores India’s emergence as a key exporter of major defence hardware, bolstering its position on the global stage.

This landmark agreement represents the first export order for the BrahMos missile, a joint venture between India and Russia. However, delays in delivery occurred due to the absence of a non-disclosure agreement between the two nations, a hurdle that has now been overcome, according to sources.

India’s ambitious defence export target of ₹35,000 crore by 2024-25 reflects its growing prowess in the international arms market. The country witnessed a remarkable 32.5% growth in defence exports last fiscal year, surpassing the ₹21,000-crore mark for the first time. This achievement underscores India’s commitment to bolstering its indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem and expanding its footprint in military exports.

With military hardware exports currently reaching around 85 countries and involving approximately 100 domestic firms, India’s offerings span a diverse range of equipment, including missiles, artillery guns, armoured vehicles, surveillance systems, and more. This successful delivery to the Philippines not only strengthens bilateral ties but also reaffirms India’s status as a reliable partner in the global defence arena.
