India’s Chief Economic Adviser Emphasizes Health as Key to Development by 2047

V. Anantha Nageswaran, India’s Chief Economic Adviser, has underscored the critical importance of a healthy population in India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation by 2047. Speaking at the Madras Management Association’s annual convention themed “India@2047-Leapfrogging to the Future,” Nageswaran highlighted the necessity for physical and mental well-being among the populace.

Drawing attention to the impact of COVID-19 on India’s relatively unhealthy population, Nageswaran expressed concern over the country potentially becoming sicker before becoming richer. He cautioned against unhealthy consumption patterns, citing alarming rates of child obesity and diabetes. Nageswaran emphasized the responsibility of businesses and individuals in promoting physical fitness and mental health, cautioning against excessive consumption of social media.

Amid discussions on India’s economic growth, Nageswaran noted a projected growth rate of over 7% for three consecutive years post-COVID, with estimates indicating sustained growth at 7% for the year ending March 2025. While expressing optimism about India’s prospects, he urged realistic assessments of challenges and cognitive limitations to avoid pitfalls such as overheating the economy due to excess optimism.

Addressing essential aspects for India’s development, Nageswaran emphasized the importance of skilling and creating employment opportunities, particularly in a technology-driven economy influenced by artificial intelligence. He also highlighted the significance of energy transition and the role of regulators in ensuring sustained growth and development.

Echoing Nageswaran’s sentiments, Vini Mahajan, Secretary of the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti, emphasized India’s trajectory as a major economic power committed to social justice, egalitarianism, and sustainability.

As India navigates its path towards 2047, the convergence of economic growth, social equity, and environmental sustainability emerges as pivotal for the nation’s future development.
