ICMR Disassociates from BHU Study on Covaxin, Cites “Critical Flaws” and Misleading Claims

New Delhi: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has formally distanced itself from an observational study conducted by researchers at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) that examined the side effects of the Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin. The ICMR has criticized the study for being poorly designed with critical flaws and for misleadingly associating the research with ICMR support.

The controversial study, titled Long-Term Safety Analysis of the BBV152 Coronavirus Vaccine in Adolescents and Adults: Findings from a 1-Year Prospective Study in North India, claimed to analyze the long-term safety of Covaxin over a one-year period. However, the ICMR has condemned the paper for its methodological shortcomings and incorrect claims.

In an official letter to the BHU researchers, ICMR Director General Rajiv Bahl stated that the ICMR did not provide any financial or technical support for the research. He emphasized that the study was “poorly designed” and “incorrectly and misleadingly” acknowledged ICMR’s involvement. Dr. Bahl further indicated that the ICMR is considering legal and administrative actions due to these lapses.

The ICMR’s disapproval highlights significant issues within the study, raising concerns about its credibility and the integrity of the claims made. The distancing by the ICMR aims to maintain its scientific standards and clarify any misconceptions about its involvement.

This incident underscores the importance of rigorous scientific methodology and the necessity of transparent and accurate disclosure of research affiliations and support. The potential legal actions by the ICMR also reflect the seriousness of ensuring that scientific research maintains high standards of accuracy and reliability.
