In a special session of the Haryana State Assembly, newly sworn-in Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, also the State BJP president and MP, moved a confidence motion, initiating a floor test on March 13. The Speaker allocated two hours for the discussion on the motion. During the proceedings, five Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) MLAs left the House when the trust vote was brought up, following a three-line whip from the JJP instructing them to be “positively absent during voting on Confidence Motion.”
The JJP’s move to abstain from voting highlighted internal political dynamics, and the party’s decision to stay away during the floor test brought attention to the complexities within the ruling coalition.
As the session unfolded, Congress MLAs questioned the urgency of convening the Assembly, with senior leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda emphasizing that there was no emergency warranting an immediate session. Despite the objections, the Speaker proceeded with the proceedings, rejecting calls for an adjournment to allow legislators more time to reach the Assembly.
The confidence motion presented a crucial moment for the newly appointed Chief Minister to secure political stability and consolidate support within the assembly.
