In a tragic incident, at least four people were killed and 39 injured following an explosion and subsequent major fire at the Amudan Chemical Company in Dombivli, Maharashtra. The explosion occurred around 1:40 pm on May 23 in Phase 2 of the Dombivli MIDC area, according to the Thane Municipal Corporation.
Eyewitnesses reported three to four back-to-back blasts in nearby factories, exacerbating the disaster. The explosions caused significant smog, and the impact was felt in the residential area where window glasses shattered due to the force of the blasts.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis addressed the situation on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Arrangements have been made for treatment of injured and more ambulances have been kept ready. I had a conversation with the Thane collector and they are also reaching on the spot…Teams of NDRF, TDRF, and fire brigade have been called.”
Authorities have prioritized rescue operations, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF), and the fire brigade actively involved in securing the site and providing medical assistance to the injured. Those affected have been transported to the nearest hospitals for treatment.
Deputy Chief Minister Fadnavis also mentioned that instructions have been issued to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. The district authorities have been tasked with determining the cause of the explosion and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.
As the rescue operations continue, the focus remains on providing immediate assistance to the injured and ensuring the safety of the surrounding area. The authorities have assured that a comprehensive inquiry will follow to prevent such incidents in the future and to take appropriate action against any negligence found.
