Dinesh Karthik, a distinguished Indian cricketer, officially announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Saturday. Making his debut for India in an ODI against England at Lord’s in September 2004 at the age of 19, Karthik’s career spanned nearly two decades, during which he played for six different teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Karthik’s Emotional Farewell
In a heartfelt message posted on X (formerly Twitter), Karthik expressed his gratitude to fans, coaches, teammates, and his family for their unwavering support throughout his career. He said, “I’ve been overwhelmed by the affection, support and love I have received in the last few days. My deepest gratitude and sincere thanks to all the fans who have made this feeling possible. Having given it plenty of thought for some time now, I have decided to move on from playing representative cricket. I officially announce my retirement and put my playing days behind me as I square up for the new challenges that lie ahead.”
Karthik extended special thanks to his parents, his wife Dipika Pallikal, a professional squash player, and his fans, acknowledging their vital roles in his journey. He reflected on his luck and privilege in representing the nation, saying, “Among the millions that play the sport in our country, I consider myself among the lucky few to have had the chance to represent the nation, and luckier still to have earned the goodwill of so many fans and friends.”
Career Highlights
- International Career: Karthik represented India in 180 international matches across all three formats, scoring 3463 runs, including a Test century and 17 half-centuries. As a wicketkeeper, he accounted for 172 dismissals, predominantly behind the stumps.
- IPL Career: Karthik played for six different teams over 17 IPL seasons, amassing close to 5000 runs, taking 145 catches, and making 37 stumpings. His stellar performance in the 2022 IPL season, scoring 330 runs at a strike rate of 183, earned him a recall to the Indian team for the T20 World Cup, marking his last appearance in national colors.
Despite his efforts and impressive form, Karthik’s hopes for a final comeback were dashed when selectors opted for younger talent ahead of the T20 World Cup squad announcement.
