Delhi Court Reserves Order on Arvind Kejriwal’s Plea for Medical Assistance in Jail

The Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi has deferred its ruling on a petition filed by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, seeking medical assistance for his acute diabetes while under judicial custody in connection with the Delhi liquor excise policy case. Kejriwal’s plea, which includes requests for insulin administration and daily consultations with his doctor via video conferencing, has ignited debate over his healthcare rights while incarcerated.

The court is scheduled to deliver its verdict on Monday, April 22, following arguments presented by both parties. Kejriwal’s petition, supported by his wife Sunita Kejriwal’s inclusion in medical consultations, underscores concerns regarding his health and access to adequate treatment.

The plea outlines Kejriwal’s medical history and the successful implementation of an ‘Insulin Reversal Programme’ under prior medical supervision. However, his arrest disrupted the regimen, leading to apprehensions about his well-being in custody.

Amidst allegations of denial of medical care, the Delhi Lieutenant Governor’s directive to investigate claims of insulin denial at Tihar jail adds a layer of complexity to the situation. The exchange between the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Kejriwal’s legal team further underscores the contentious nature of the case, with the ED alleging deviations from prescribed dietary guidelines and Kejriwal refuting these claims.

Kejriwal’s counsel, Senior Advocate Abhishek Singhvi, vehemently defended his client’s dietary choices, asserting adherence to medical recommendations. Singhvi’s impassioned defense reflects the gravity of the situation, emphasizing Kejriwal’s right to dignified healthcare even in custody.

The court’s decision on Kejriwal’s plea will shape the discourse on healthcare rights for detainees and the obligation of authorities to ensure access to essential medical services. As the legal battle unfolds, Kejriwal’s case epitomizes broader concerns about healthcare access and prisoner rights within the criminal justice system.
