Congress MP Ravneet Singh Bittu made a significant political move on Tuesday, announcing his switch to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, the Ludhiana MP expressed admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, citing their genuine concern for Punjab’s development.
“In the last 10 years, I have witnessed PM Modi and Amit Shah’s deep affection for Punjab. They are committed to undertaking extensive developmental initiatives for the state,” Bittu remarked, highlighting the positive response he received from the Prime Minister and Home Minister regarding Punjab’s issues.
Bittu, who comes from a prominent political lineage as the grandson of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh and son of former Punjab Minister Tej Parkash Singh, emphasized the importance of Punjab’s progress. He commended the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for their efforts in promoting peace, especially during the challenging times of terrorism in the state.
The BJP welcomed Bittu’s decision, with General Secretary Vinod Tawde expressing confidence that his entry into the party would fortify it. Bittu’s inclusion in the Punjab unit’s Pradesh Election Committee earlier this year underlined his influence within the political landscape of the state.
The announcement of BJP’s solo participation in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Punjab was made by Punjab BJP Chief Sunil Jakhar. Jakhar emphasized that the decision was made after thorough consultations with stakeholders, focusing on the region’s future, particularly the welfare of youth and farmers.
Sources revealed that talks between the BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) faltered due to the latter’s insistence on an unconditional alliance. SAD’s demands, including the withdrawal of cases against protesting farmers, remained unresolved, leading to the breakdown of negotiations between the two parties.
