A significant blaze engulfed Phoenix Mall in Pune’s bustling Viman Nagar area on Friday afternoon, prompting a swift response from six fire engines dispatched by the Pune Fire Department. The fire, which broke out at Phoenix Marketcity Pune, a premier shopping and entertainment destination, stirred concern among residents and authorities.

Phoenix Marketcity Pune stands as an epitome of integrated lifestyle offerings, boasting a myriad of amenities including shopping, dining, movies, and entertainment. Its sprawling complex houses a diverse array of establishments, catering to the diverse needs of the modernizing city.

The incident comes amidst record high temperatures in Pune, coinciding with a surge in fire outbreaks across the city. While the exact cause of the Phoenix Mall fire is yet to be determined, the city has witnessed a notable increase in fire incidents in recent months, with March and April recording a concerning spike.

According to data shared by the fire department, garbage fires have been a primary contributing factor to the escalating number of incidents. March alone saw 572 fire occurrences, while April witnessed 440 incidents in the first half of the month, underscoring the urgent need for heightened vigilance and preventive measures.

In an unrelated incident, a massive fire erupted at NTPC’s North Karanpura super thermal power plant in Jharkhand’s Chatra district. The blaze, reported around 2 pm, originated at the BHEL material yard of unit 3 in the power plant. Efforts are underway to extinguish the fire, with no casualties reported thus far, according to senior BHEL officials.

As authorities work tirelessly to contain these incidents, vigilance and proactive measures remain paramount in safeguarding lives and property against the threat of fires, especially amidst rising temperatures and heightened fire risks.
