Bihar’s Rural Development and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Shravan Kumar, a member of the Janata Dal (United), made serious allegations on Thursday, claiming that the Opposition is actively attempting to entice MLAs from his party. Without directly naming anyone, Kumar asserted that contractors have been dispatched to the residences of JD(U) MLAs, insinuating a covert strategy to sway their allegiance. Despite these alleged efforts, Kumar expressed confidence that JD(U) MLAs would remain steadfast and united.
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, is slated to undergo a floor test in the Bihar Legislative Assembly on February 12, amidst speculations of potential defections within the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).
Amidst escalating tensions, Kumar’s remarks come in the wake of heightened anticipation surrounding the floor test, particularly following the JD(U)’s withdrawal from the Mahagathbandhan coalition on January 28, 2024. Former Deputy Chief Minister and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav’s cryptic statement, “Khela Hona Abhi Baaki Hai” (Game yet to be played), has further fueled uncertainties regarding the political landscape.
“Contractors are being dispatched to our MLAs’ residences, but I can confidently state that JD(U) MLAs are resolute in their unity, and we will unequivocally demonstrate our majority on February 12,” asserted Kumar, emphasizing the NDA’s strength in surpassing the magic figure of 122 seats required for majority. He dismissed any notion of fracturing within the JD(U) ranks, cautioning those attempting such maneuvers of impending disappointment.
Responding to inquiries about opposition outreach to MLAs, Kumar reiterated his faith in Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s leadership, affirming that JD(U) members stand firmly behind him. He assured reporters that all preparations for the impending floor test are in order, brushing off concerns with a confident “All is ok.”
Ahead of the crucial floor test, JD(U) has scheduled a Legislative party meeting on February 11, underscoring the party’s concerted efforts to consolidate support. In response to JD(U)’s accusations, RJD spokesperson Shakti Yadav refuted any involvement in MLA defections, expressing confidence that the people of Bihar would deliver a resounding message to Mr. Kumar in the days ahead.
