Biden Administration Eyes Restrictions on Advanced AI Models to Counter China and Russia

Sources reveal that the Biden administration is preparing to fortify U.S. AI defenses against China and Russia by imposing restrictions on the most advanced AI Models, including core software like ChatGPT. The Commerce Department is reportedly contemplating regulatory measures to limit the export of proprietary or closed-source AI models, which safeguard their software and training data.

These proposed actions are intended to complement existing efforts to curb the export of sophisticated AI chips to China, aimed at impeding Beijing’s military-focused technological advancements. However, regulators face the challenge of keeping pace with the rapid evolution of the AI industry.

While the Commerce Department declined to comment on the matter, the Russian Embassy in Washington did not provide an immediate response. In contrast, the Chinese Embassy condemned the move as “economic coercion and unilateral bullying,” pledging to take necessary measures to safeguard its interests.

This development underscores the escalating tensions surrounding AI technology and geopolitical rivalries, highlighting the complexities of regulating AI exports in a global landscape.
