The Opposition has maintained silence on the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) report suggesting the existence of a “huge temple” beneath the Gyanvapi Masjid near the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. The RSS and BJP have indicated a cautious approach, stating they will wait for the courts to take the lead in the matter.
The ASI report, submitted to the Varanasi district court, revealed that a large Hindu temple existed before the construction of the Gyanvapi Masjid, with parts of it being reused. The Opposition has refrained from commenting on the issue, while the RSS and BJP suggested waiting for legal proceedings to unfold.
An RSS functionary stated that society itself is actively addressing cultural concerns, reducing the need for the Sangh to intervene. The BJP echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that the ASI report had been submitted as required, and the courts would handle the matter, akin to the resolution of the Ram Janmabhoomi case.
An RSS leader from Uttar Pradesh highlighted the ongoing cultural discussions in society and the enthusiasm surrounding religious and cultural matters. This approach aligns with RSS Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat’s statement in 2022, emphasizing the importance of societal awareness without launching movements into disputes.
While the VHP expressed readiness to wait for the court’s decision, they added a rider, urging society to recognize historical facts. BJP leader Giriraj Singh appealed to Muslims to hand over the Gyanvapi mosque site to Hindus for communal harmony, emphasizing the changed dynamics in India and the need for peace.
