Police Identify Over 4,600 Involved in Poll-Related Violence Across Andhra Pradesh

Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh police have identified the involvement of approximately 4,668 individuals in various incidents of poll-related violence that occurred across several districts, including Palnadu, Anantapur, Tirupati, Chittoor, Nandyal, and Guntur, from May 12 to 14.

Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta announced in a release on May 21 (Tuesday) that the investigation officers have already arrested some of the accused. Notices under Section 41-A of the CrPC have been issued to several others. Efforts are ongoing to trace the whereabouts of the remaining suspects involved in violent incidents that occurred on March 12 (pre-poll day), March 13, and March 14 (post-poll period).

SIT Involvement and Recommendations

The Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by Vineet Brijlal, Inspector General of the State Intelligence Bureau (SIB), has been actively involved in assessing and addressing the cases related to the violence. The SIT observed that many cases were not filed under appropriate sections, and a significant number of accused individuals were still at large.

To expedite the legal process, the SIT has directed the investigation officers to file memos in the relevant courts to include appropriate sections in the cases. This move is aimed at ensuring that the cases are handled with the severity they warrant and that justice is served promptly.

Steps Taken

The police are intensifying their efforts to locate and apprehend the remaining suspects. This includes issuing notices, conducting raids, and collaborating with local authorities to gather information about the individuals’ whereabouts.
