Intermittent rain in May has brought significant relief to the drought-prone Anantapur district, marking a notable shift in the prevailing weather pattern.
Earlier this month, day temperatures in Anantapur had soared to 43 degrees Celsius, but they have since plummeted due to intermittent rains influenced by a low-pressure weather system.
The district has received approximately 300% more rainfall than average this May, recording 103.5 mm of precipitation compared to the average of 25.8 mm. Last year, the district received 74.5 mm of rain in May.
Anantapur has experienced good rainfall from June last year to February this year, with a cumulative total of 397.4 mm. Of this, May alone accounted for 104.1 mm, slightly below the expected 501.6 mm.
A mandal-wise analysis reveals significant variations in rainfall levels. Shettur mandal received the highest rainfall with 171.9 mm, marking a 551% increase from the average of 26.1 mm. Kundurpi mandal received 140.9 mm compared to the expected 27.3 mm, and Uravakonda recorded a 601.7% increase with 206.3 mm compared to the average of 29.4 mm.
This May has been one of the wettest months for Anantapur district, bringing relief to farmers and residents alike.
