Amazon Expands Same-Day Prescription Delivery to New York City and Los Angeles

Amazon has broadened its same-day delivery services to include prescription medications in New York City and the greater Los Angeles area, marking an expansion of its efforts to provide customers with rapid access to essential goods.

The e-commerce giant announced on Tuesday that customers in these regions can now receive their prescription drugs on the same day as their order through Amazon Pharmacy, the company’s online pharmacy service launched in 2020. Leveraging its existing logistics network and smaller facilities stocked with common prescription medications, Amazon aims to expedite the delivery process, enabling prescriptions to be processed within minutes.

Doug Herrington, CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores, emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing convenience and speed in prescription medication delivery, stating that these faster delivery speeds will significantly benefit customers in need of urgent medications.

Initial rollout of same-day prescription deliveries includes select areas such as San Bernardino, Riverside, and Anaheim in the greater Los Angeles area, with plans to extend coverage to the broader LA metro area in April. Amazon also intends to introduce same-day prescription services in more than a dozen additional cities by the end of the year.

This expansion follows Amazon’s previous introduction of same-day prescription delivery in cities like Seattle, Miami, Indianapolis, Phoenix, and Austin. Additionally, the company has initiated drone delivery of prescription medications in College Station, Texas, as part of its ongoing efforts to innovate in delivery logistics.

To enhance efficiency and sustainability, Amazon is utilizing e-bikes for some Amazon Pharmacy deliveries in New York City, complementing its existing e-cargo delivery bike initiatives aimed at reducing emissions and speeding up deliveries in urban areas.
