Arvind Kejriwal Vows Not to Resign, Cites Threat to Democracy

In an interview with PTI Videos on May 22, Kejriwal, who is expected to return to Tihar Jail after his interim bail ends on June 1, revealed his plans to approach the court to allow him to fulfill his duties as Chief Minister from prison. “I will seek permission from the court to continue my work as the Chief Minister of Delhi even while I am in jail,” he said.

The AAP national convener was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 in connection with a money laundering case related to his government’s liquor excise policy. The BJP has been actively critical of Kejriwal and his administration, alleging widespread corruption and mismanagement.

Kejriwal’s arrest and the subsequent legal battles have sparked significant political tensions, with AAP leaders and supporters accusing the BJP of orchestrating a witch-hunt to discredit opposition figures. “Resigning now would be akin to surrendering to these undemocratic tactics,” Kejriwal remarked, underscoring the importance of standing firm against what he describes as political vendetta.

As Kejriwal prepares to face further legal challenges, his determination to remain in office sends a strong message about his commitment to his role and responsibilities as Delhi’s Chief Minister. The situation continues to develop, with the eyes of the nation fixed on the unfolding political drama.

Kejriwal’s stance highlights the broader concerns about the integrity of democratic institutions and the potential misuse of power by the ruling party. His decision not to resign, despite facing significant personal and political pressure, is seen as a move to safeguard democratic values and ensure that opposition leaders can operate without fear of unwarranted persecution.
