PM Modi Responds to the Passing of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi

The tragic death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has prompted condolences from leaders around the world, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who expressed deep sadness at the loss. Raisi’s contributions to strengthening the bilateral relationship between India and Iran were acknowledged and honored by PM Modi in his message.

Raisi’s untimely demise occurred after his helicopter went missing and subsequently crashed in the mountainous region of Iran. Alongside Raisi, several officials, including Iran’s foreign minister, lost their lives in the tragic accident.

The Iranian government confirmed Raisi’s death, stating that he had attained the highest level of martyrdom while serving the nation. The crash, which claimed the lives of nine individuals, occurred during Raisi’s visit to inaugurate a dam project in the East Azerbaijan province.

Raisi, a staunch conservative, had been widely expected to succeed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He had served as president since 2021, succeeding the moderate President Hassan Rouhani.

During his tenure, Iran witnessed significant civil protests following the death of Mahsa Amini, sparking nationwide unrest over women’s rights and government policies. In his final speech, Raisi reiterated his support for Gaza, which had been under attack from Israel since the previous October.

The loss of President Raisi marks a significant moment for Iran and the region, prompting reflections on his leadership and contributions to the nation.
