Indian Mission in Kyrgyzstan Advises Nationals Amid Mob Violence Targeting International Students

The Indian mission in Kyrgyzstan has issued an advisory urging its nationals to remain indoors as reports of large-scale mob violence targeting international students surface in the Central Asian country.

The advisory emphasizes that while the situation is presently calm, students are advised to stay indoors and contact the Embassy in case of any issues. The recent violence stemmed from a May 13 clash between locals and international students at a hostel in Bishkek, leading to protests, traffic blockages, and property damage. Security forces have taken measures to apprehend those involved.

Kyrgyzstan, particularly popular for medical education, attracts numerous students from the Indian subcontinent, including India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Current data suggests around 9,500 students from various medical universities are pursuing studies in the country.

In response to the escalating violence, the Pakistan embassy in Bishkek has also issued an advisory for international students, including Pakistanis. The advisory highlights incidents of violence, particularly after videos depicting a confrontation between Kyrgyz and Egyptian students circulated online. Several hostels and residences of international students, including Pakistanis, have been targeted.

While minor injuries have been reported among Pakistani students, there are no confirmed cases of fatalities or sexual assaults. The embassy has taken measures to contact over 250 students and their families in Pakistan, urging them to remain indoors until the situation stabilizes.

The violence appears to be indiscriminate, targeting all foreign students and not specifically directed at Pakistanis. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and provide necessary assistance to ensure the safety and well-being of international students amidst the unrest.
