Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Yogi Adityanath stirred controversy on Tuesday by alleging that the Congress party aims to implement Sharia law across India. His comments came just days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggested that the Congress’s election manifesto included promises to redistribute people’s property to the Muslim community.
Addressing a rally in Amroha, Yogi Adityanath stated, “The Congress and its allies have betrayed the country and have once again come to you with their false manifesto. If you look at the Congress’ manifesto, they say that if they form a government, we will implement Sharia law.” He challenged the audience, asking, “Will this country be run by the Constitution made by Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar or by Shariat?”
The UP CM further explained that the Congress had promised in its election manifesto to implement personal laws, which he suggested could mean Sharia law. He linked this claim to the Congress’s stance on the practice of triple talaq, which Prime Minister Modi’s government abolished. According to Adityanath, the Congress’s plan to restore personal law could be interpreted as a push toward Sharia law.
In his speech, Yogi Adityanath echoed Prime Minister Modi’s earlier remark that the Congress party intended to seize property from citizens and redistribute it. He asked the audience, “Do you want to allow the Congress and Samajwadi Party to loot your property?”
The chief minister also directed criticism toward former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s 2006 remark that Muslims have the “first right” on the country’s resources. He questioned how this would affect marginalized communities, including Dalits, backward classes, Kharagvanshis, Pals, the poor, and farmers.
Beyond his comments on Congress, Yogi Adityanath addressed the issue of terrorism, claiming that terrorism in India has been significantly reduced under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership. He mentioned that even if a firecracker explodes somewhere, Pakistan is quick to clarify its non-involvement due to fear of retaliation from India.
The Chief Minister’s statements have sparked debate and further fueled the ongoing political discourse ahead of upcoming elections. While BJP leaders, including Yogi Adityanath, have consistently targeted Congress’s policies, the allegations of Sharia law implementation and property redistribution have drawn considerable attention and reactions from political analysts and citizens alike.
