Five Earthquakes Strike Hualien County in Taiwan Within 9 Minutes

Eastern Taiwan experienced a flurry of seismic activity on Monday when five earthquakes struck Shoufeng Township, Hualien County, within a span of just 9 minutes. According to reports from the Central News Agency Focus Taiwan, the quakes occurred between 5:08 pm and 5:17 pm (local time).

CNA Focus Taiwan announced on X, “Five #earthquakes struck Shoufeng Township, Hualien County, eastern Taiwan, in 9 minutes between 5:08 p.m. and 5:17 p.m. (UTC 8).”

This latest series of earthquakes comes just two weeks after a powerful tremor measuring 7.4 on the Richter Scale hit Taiwan’s eastern shores, resulting in the loss of four lives and over 700 injuries. The earlier earthquake, which struck Hualien City on April 3, left 132 people injured in Hualien County alone, as stated by the National Fire Agency.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) also commented on the seismic activity, noting the most recent quake’s significant magnitude and epicenter. In a post on X, they shared, “Notable quake, preliminary info: M 6.5 – 11 km NE of Hualien City, Taiwan.”

The recurrence of earthquakes in Hualien County has raised concerns among residents and authorities, with many fearing the potential for further seismic disturbances. The National Fire Agency has been providing support to those affected and continues to monitor the situation closely.

As Taiwan frequently experiences seismic activity due to its location along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” residents are urged to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols in case of further quakes. Local authorities and emergency services are on high alert to ensure the safety and well-being of the population during this ongoing period of heightened seismic activity.
