NEW DELHI – The Indian Railways has announced a revised deadline of August 2025 for the completion of the Sivok-Rangpo Rail Project, aiming to establish the first-ever rail connection between Sikkim and the rest of the country. With significant progress made in mining work across 10 out of 14 tunnels, the project is poised to bridge the connectivity gap in the region.
Covering a distance of 44.96 km from Sivok to Ranpo, the project encompasses 14 tunnels, 22 bridges, and five railway stations. Once operational, it will facilitate seamless travel between Sikkim and neighboring regions, enhancing accessibility and connectivity.
The completion of mining work in 10 tunnels marks a significant milestone in the project’s development. Efforts are underway to expedite the lining work in the remaining tunnels, with steady progress reported across various components of the project, including major bridges and railway stations.
Challenges posed by geological conditions, particularly in tunnels T-8 and T-10, have necessitated innovative solutions to ensure project continuity. Despite encountering obstacles such as poor rock strata, project engineers remain committed to overcoming hurdles and maintaining progress.
The Sivok-Rangpo Rail Project has faced delays stemming from various factors, including land acquisition issues, forest clearances, and disruptions caused by natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic. However, with all tenders awarded and execution underway, the project is on track to meet its revised completion timeline.
The project’s initial cost estimate of ₹4,085 crores has been revised to approximately ₹12,132.95 crores, reflecting the scale and complexity of the endeavor. Despite the challenges encountered, the Indian Railways remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering this transformative infrastructure project for the benefit of the region’s residents and travelers alike.
