Kamal Haasan Advocates ‘Dravidian Model’ of Governance Amidst Campaigning in Chennai

Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan has put forth a resounding call for embracing a ‘Dravidian model’ of governance and development, juxtaposing it with the much-discussed ‘Gujarat model.’ Speaking passionately during a campaign rally for DMK’s South Chennai candidate Thamizhachi Thangapandian in the Mylapore area, Haasan, also the chief of Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), emphasized the significance of collaborative progress over singular achievements.

Asserting the relevance of the Dravidian model in contemporary governance, Haasan highlighted the need to move forward collectively, championing inclusivity and unity in driving societal advancement. “People cannot always say that the Gujarat model is great, we have come to this model, which is also great (Dravidian model). Hereafter India should follow Dravidian model,” he asserted, urging for a unified approach towards nation-building.

Dispelling notions of personal ambition, Haasan reiterated his commitment to the collective cause, emphasizing the importance of supporting DMK’s candidate without any ulterior motives. Referring to the symbol of the rising sun, synonymous with the DMK, Haasan called upon voters to rally behind the shared vision of progress and empowerment for the nation.

With MNM aligning with the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu, Haasan’s campaign rally witnessed a convergence of party cadres from various alliance partners, including the Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Communist Party of India, and Communist Party of India (Marxist). Stressing the importance of unity, Haasan reiterated the significance of the national flag as a unifying emblem amidst diverse political affiliations.

As Tamil Nadu gears up for the first phase of general elections scheduled for April 19, Haasan’s advocacy for the Dravidian model adds a significant dimension to the electoral discourse. Reflecting on the DMK’s sweeping victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in the state, Haasan’s rallying cry underscores the enduring influence of Dravidian ideology in shaping Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. With the electoral verdict set to be unveiled on June 4, the stage is set for a vibrant democratic exercise in the state.
