Maryland Department of Agriculture Opens Applications for 2024 Small Acreage Cover Crop Program

Annapolis, MD (March 27, 2024) – The Maryland Department of Agriculture has commenced the sign-up period for its 2024 Small Acreage Cover Crop Program, running from March 25 through April 30, 2024. This initiative aims to support small farms and urban growers by offering grants to facilitate the planting of cover crops in their production areas.

The program targets growers who cultivate less than ten (10) acres of qualifying cover crops, which may include cereal grains or cover crop seed mixes. By participating in this program, growers can access financial assistance of up to $1,500 per grower per year.

The primary objective of the Small Acreage Cover Crop Program is to foster the adoption of cover cropping practices among small-scale agricultural producers. These cover crops play a crucial role in enhancing soil health, boosting crop yields, safeguarding local water quality, and fortifying climate resilience.

By encouraging the widespread adoption of cover cropping, the Maryland Department of Agriculture seeks to empower small farms and urban growers to contribute to sustainable agricultural practices while mitigating environmental impacts.

Interested growers are urged to take advantage of this opportunity by submitting their applications during the designated sign-up period. Through collective efforts, Maryland aims to bolster its agricultural sector’s sustainability and resilience while promoting environmental stewardship among its farming community.
